In Freemasonry, the Festive Board is more than just a post-meeting meal—it's a structured social gathering steeped in tradition, symbolism, and camaraderie. While the Lodge room is where the formal rituals take place, the Festive Board is where bonds are strengthened over food, drink, and good humour.
What Is a Festive Board?
A Festive Board is the formal dinner held after a Masonic meeting. It typically includes:
- A structured seating arrangement
- A set menu (often traditional British fare)
- A series of formal toasts
- Speeches and responses
- Singing of Masonic songs
- A focus on fellowship and hospitality
The format can vary slightly between jurisdictions and individual Lodges, but the core principles remain the same: respect, friendship, and celebration.
The Structure of the Evening
1. Opening Grace
The evening usually begins with a short grace or blessing, often delivered by the Lodge Chaplain or a designated brother.
2. Meal Service
The meal is typically a three-course dinner, with traditional dishes like roast meats, seasonal vegetables, and a dessert—often accompanied by wine or port.
3. Formal Toasts
Toasts are a central part of the Festive Board. Common toasts include;
- You will have to join to find out!
Each toast is often followed by a short speech or response, and sometimes a humorous anecdote or story.
At one particularly spirited Festive Board, the Junior Warden stood up to propose the toast to the visitors. He began with gusto, “Brethren, I give you the toast to the…” and then paused. For a full 30 seconds. He had forgotten who he was toasting. A helpful whisper came from the side: “The visitors!”
He nodded solemnly and declared, “To the visitors!”
The visitors, bless them, toasted back with the enthusiasm of people who had just been promoted to honorary furniture.
4. Masonic Songs
Songs are usually sung at the Festive Board and with gusto. These songs are part of the oral tradition of Freemasonry and help reinforce the values of the Craft.
Why It Matters
The Festive Board is not just a meal—it’s a continuation of the Lodge’s values in a more relaxed setting. It fosters;
- Brotherhood: Strengthening personal connections
- Tradition: Preserving centuries-old customs
- Hospitality: Welcoming visitors and guests
- Reflection: Offering a space to discuss the evening’s work
Final Thoughts
Whether you're a seasoned Mason or a curious outsider, the Festive Board is a unique and cherished part of Masonic life.
