One of the most frequent questions asked of Freemasons is a simple one, “What do you actually do?” The answers are many, ritual, fellowship, self-improvement, but at the very heart of Freemasonry sits something far more outward-looking and enduring...... charity.
For Brethren of The Izaak Walton Lodge, charity is not an optional extra or an occasional appeal. It is woven into the fabric of Freemasonry itself and expressed locally, nationally, and quietly, often without fanfare or expectation of recognition.
Charity as a Fundamental Masonic Principle
Freemasonry teaches that we should improve ourselves in order to better serve others. Charity, therefore, is not merely about giving money, it is about compassion in action, relief in times of need, and care for those less fortunate, whether they are known to us or complete strangers.
From the earliest days of the Craft, Freemasons have pledged to support the widows, children, and dependants of Brethren, and to extend that support into the wider community. This ethos remains unchanged today.
UGLE and National Masonic Charity
Under the stewardship of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), Freemasonry in England and Wales coordinates one of the largest and most effective charitable operations in the country.
At the centre of this work is the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF), which brings together the charitable efforts of English Freemasonry under a single, powerful banner. The MCF supports a wide range of causes, including:
- Medical research and healthcare, such as hospices, air ambulances, and specialist hospitals
- Support for vulnerable children and young people
- Mental health services
- Disaster relief, both at home and overseas
- Care for the elderly, including dementia support
In addition, the MCF provides direct assistance to Freemasons and their families who are experiencing hardship, illness, or personal crisis, often discreetly and promptly, when it is needed most.
Local Charity, Local Impact
While national figures are impressive, the true strength of Masonic charity lies at lodge and provincial level. Individual Lodges, including The Izaak Walton Lodge, actively support local causes that matter to their communities.
This may include:
- Fundraising for local charities and community groups
- Supporting food banks, care homes, and youth organisations
- Participating in provincial charity initiatives
- Offering time, skills, and practical help, not just financial donations
These smaller acts of kindness, when multiplied across thousands of Lodges, create a remarkable collective impact.
Charity Without Recognition
A defining feature of Masonic charity is that it is often offered quietly. Freemasons are taught not to seek praise or publicity for their giving, and much of the Craft’s charitable work takes place without public awareness.
This silence is not secrecy, it is humility.
The satisfaction comes not from applause, but from knowing that help has been given where it was genuinely needed.
Why It Matters Today
In an uncertain world, where communities face pressures from rising costs, isolation, and hardship, the principles of Freemasonry are perhaps more relevant than ever. Charity, guided by wisdom and compassion, provides stability and hope, not only to recipients, but to those who give.
For members of The Izaak Walton Lodge, charitable work strengthens our bonds as Brethren, reminds us of our responsibilities beyond the Lodge room, and gives real meaning to the teachings we uphold.
In Closing
Charity is not something Freemasonry does,it is something Freemasonry is.
Through the work of UGLE, the Masonic Charitable Foundation, and local Lodges across the country, Freemasons continue a quiet tradition of service that has endured for centuries.
And long may it continue.
At The Izaak Walton Lodge, we are proud to stand as part of this tradition, supporting our community, our fellow Brethren, and the wider world, one good cause at a time.
