Brother Ian Whatmough’s Journey
At the Izaak Walton Lodge, we are proud to celebrate the stories and experiences of our members, stories that reflect the values, traditions, and enduring friendships that define Freemasonry. Today, we are delighted to share the journey of Brother Ian Whatmough, whose Masonic life spans more than four decades.
A Family Tradition Begins
For Ian, Freemasonry was never something distant or unknown, it was woven into the fabric of family life. His earliest memories of the Lodge came not from within the Temple itself, but from the social side of the fraternity.
His journey began by attending Ladies’ Evenings alongside his sister, wife, and close family friends, all in support of his father. These occasions offered a first glimpse into the camaraderie and warmth that Freemasonry fosters, planting the seed for what would become a lifelong commitment.
Inspired by these experiences, Ian made the decision to join the Lodge while his father was serving as Master of Izaak Walton Lodge in 1980. The following year, in April 1981, he was initiated, joining not only his father, but also his grandfather, as part of a proud Masonic lineage.
Progression Through the Lodge
Like many dedicated Freemasons, Ian’s journey has been marked by steady progression, commitment, and service. In the year 2000, he experienced one of the most significant milestones in any Mason’s life, being installed as Master of the Lodge.
Reflecting on that moment, Ian describes it as deeply emotional, and speaks warmly of the wonderful year he spent in the Chair. It was a time filled with pride, responsibility, and the opportunity to lead the Lodge he had been part of for nearly two decades.
Following his Mastership, Ian continued to serve the Lodge in a variety of important roles, including Assistant Director of Ceremonies and Director of Ceremonies. Today, he holds the office of Charity Steward, an essential role that supports one of Freemasonry’s core principles, charity.
His dedication has also been recognised at Provincial level, where he was promoted to Provincial Steward. In true Masonic spirit, Ian humbly jokes that this honour may have had something to do with supporting “the lovely Millie working behind the bar”, a reminder that humour and camaraderie are as much a part of Freemasonry as its traditions.
Memorable Moments
Every Mason carries with him moments that stay etched in memory, and for Ian, two stand out above all.
The first takes him back to his initiation. When asked to make a charitable donation, Ian found himself without any cash. In a quietly humorous and human moment, he turned to his father and whispered, “lend us a quid!” a memory that still brings a smile today.
The second was his installation as Master, a moment of great pride and emotion. For Ian, it represented not only personal achievement, but the continuation of a family tradition and the trust placed in him by his fellow Brethren.
Over 40 Years of Brotherhood
Reflecting on more than 40 years in Freemasonry, Ian speaks with genuine warmth and gratitude. He describes his experience as one filled with friendship, support, tradition, fun, and a strong sense of purpose through charitable work.
His words capture the essence of what Freemasonry offers:
“Freemasonry gives you excellent values and like most organisations the more you put in the more you get out of it.”
It is a sentiment that resonates with all who have experienced the Lodge, not just as an organisation, but as a lifelong community.
